John Thompson, 35, is often asked if his Little Brother Trevin Campbell, 13, is his son, due to the fact that the two look very much alike, and even have similar mannerisms. Just goes to show that the people behind the scenes at Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) are taking extra care to match the right adults (“Bigs”) to the children (“Littles”) in need of a little extra attention. In the case of John and Trevin, the two have an avid interest in science and mathematics. Trevin says those are his favourite subjects at school, whereas John holds a degree in Science and has been working for Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) for the past 11 years – his current position is Manager of IT Services. But when it is time to put the books aside, Trevin and John share a passion for sports – bodybuilding, jet skis and golf. They had a great time at the East End Surf Challenge this spring, watching the antics of the competitors in the water. When there are no special events to attend, the two spend time together, catching up with each other’s lives and just hang out, or go out to eat at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Trevin’s favourite treat. The young boy says he has grown up a lot and gained much from his time with John. His face lights up when his Big is nearby, and the bond between them is plain to see. His mentor claims that he was fortunate to have been assigned to Trevin, as he is “very outgoing, talkative and polite”. “He is a very gentle kid, and I have had no problems with him,” he states. Trevin is going to be attending boarding school in Knox, Jamaica for the next school year and says he is looking forward to it a lot, because he knows that many of his friends from George Hicks High School will be going too. John wishes the two of them had more time to spend together. He is a member of the board, and says that he first got involved with the organisation when BBBS approached CUC. “I have always wanted to help with kids,” he says, “and I never did realise that there were so many issues.” He feels it is a joy to make a difference in someone’s life.
